El portugués como un don: traducción y políticas de desarrollo social para pueblos indígenas en Brasil

Abstract

This article presents the translation of the Bolsa Família Program (BFP) booklet into 30 Brazilian indigenous languages. Jakobson's approaches of intra and interlingual translation were used to analyze cultural transposition and lexical adaptation in the translation. That allowed us to understand that the inclusion of indigenous peoples via the translation of the PBF booklet, while aiming to promote native languages, forces the inclusion of specific Portuguese-language lexicon, imposing Portuguese as the rights bargaining language when facing the State. However, the rights and concepts that serve as the basis for these policies are the result of historical processes of the surrounding society, which has long kept those same populations excluded. In order to include them now the challenge is not only how to be intelligible but also how to overcome the distance—a history of massacres and of abandonment—so that a dialogue can be possible.
